Barre By The Bay is Newport News' ONLY studio offering Barre, Spin + Barre, Spin, Hot Yoga, and infrared heated classes


Located in Port Warwick, we offer clients challenging, fun, and exciting workouts in a timely manner. Are you a stay-at-home parent? Don't worry, we offer child care services as well! 


Our #1 goal is to provide a fun, exciting, and unique experience in all levels of expertise. We plan to serve our clients, new and existing, high-quality fitness programs to promote a healthy lifestyle and personal growth within our community for years to come!

Whitney Duenas

Owner + Instructor


Whitney, with Chamorro and Dutch roots, started out her barre career numerous years ago in Eastern NC, then continued her fitness journey in Oklahoma while completing her Bachelors Degree in Marketing. She always found a way to involve barre in her daily and community activities since she saw the amazing results and wanted to share those with everyone around her. Barre, Spin, Yoga, etc. have all helped Whitney deal with stress and symptoms of Lupus SLE tremendously. Upon completion of her degree from the University of Oklahoma (Boomer Sooner!), Whitney knew the fitness world was where she wanted to take her career. Shortly after taking her first job in the "big girl" world, she knew where her heart was and took the leap to opening what we call Barre By The Bay

Megan Pupilis

Barre + Yoga Instructor


Megan discovered yoga in 2004 after discovering she was pregnant with her first son. Yoga helped her calm the stress and nerves of being a 1st time mom while also helping to speed recovery time and aid the body’s ability to “Bounce Back”. A few years and 3 kids later, she decided she wanted to teach and share the amazing benefits of yoga with others. Megan began her yoga schooling at Dragon Fly studio in Fort Walton Beach Florida, where she studied with many gifted tutors such as Laura Tyree, Bryan Kest, Doug Keller, Stephanie Keach and Felicia McQuad. She recently just received her Personal Trainer Certification and a specialty certification in Fitness Nutrition through the American Council on Exercise. Megan leads a variety of classes with a passion for instructing powerful, dynamic, flow classes that combines her long held love of movement and strength with the practice of yoga. Megan believes yoga is about challenging yourself and stepping outside of your comfort zone while also having fun, practicing humility and patience, and honoring your body for what it CAN do. Her Barre classes are a fun and challenging mix of everything she has learned about sculpting and toning our bodies in a fun and exciting environment. Students in Megan’s classes learn to face their divine “kick booty” power within while exercising their mind, body, and spirit.

Ellie Vlahos

Spin + Barre Instructor


Ellie is one of our spin + barre instructors! Heres a note from Ellie: I am 26 years old and happily married to my wonderful husband Joey. I am active duty Air Force and love all things fitness! I used to be a runner but have since fallen in love with group fitness classes as they can be fun, challenging and extremely rewarding. Through the mentorship of some pretty amazing instructors, I found myself also wanting to inspire and motivate others through teaching. She looks forward to meeting you all! 


Michelle Putnam

Spin, Barre, + Yoga Instructor


I'm originally from Richmond, VA. I started off in the U.S. Navy as a Hospital Corpsman and then went to school to be a RN. I took years of dance and coached an American All Stars dance team for 5 years. I was looking for a way to deal with stress while staying active. Barre was kind of a given with my dance history and just fell into place. I also love to teach spin and combine the two with excitement and energy. I also love studios that encourage the bond between students and teachers to help everyone find their own community. I found that same thought process with Whitney here at Barre by the Bay. I like to help my students find the same peace that they find on their mat, at the barre, or on the bike, in difficult situations in life.

Michele Van Dyke

Yoga Instructor


Michele began practicing yoga in 2000 in order to regain and maintain strength and flexibility from a hip injury she sustained while running. As soon as she attended her first class she was hooked and knew she wanted to deepen her practice. Michele received her 200 RYT through Yoga Alliance with River Yoga. She is an active teacher in Suffolk and continues her yoga education through workshops and trainings. She believes all students can attain mental and physical wellbeing through meditation and a yoga practice. Michele’s goal is to have everyone leave the yoga mat feeling empowered. She creates alignment based, physically challenging sequences that require mental focus, allowing students to find presence on their mats. Michele loves to work with students of all body types and skill levels to develop their practice, fitness, and abilities. She believes that everyone and every body can be successful on the yoga mat. 

Kristin Maxwell

Hey beautiful! My name is Kristin, I’m from Nevada and I fell in love with nutrition and fitness after experiencing an unexpected health crisis. I became thankful for what our bodies allow us to do, and never wanted to take it for granted again. I wanted to work hard to become stronger every day because my body allows me to. I developed a love for spin and barre and during that journey wanted to inspire and help others.  I can’t wait to see you in the studio and feel that burn with you!
